Expanded Warehouse Facility in Brieselang: Retail Giant Edeka Allocates €300 Million for Development in Havelland
Edeka Announces New Logistics Centre in Brieselang, Havelland
German supermarket chain Edeka has announced plans to build a new logistics centre in Brieselang, Havelland. The project, which is expected to cost around 300 million euros, is set to create approximately 1,000 new jobs and strengthen the logistical infrastructure of the capital region.
The logistics centre, scheduled to begin construction in 2028 and commissioned in the early 2030s, will span around 150,000 square meters, providing ample storage space for the distribution of goods. Edeka has already acquired approximately 60 hectares of land for the project.
Deputy Mayor Thomas Lessing views the Edeka settlement as a positive development for the economic location of Brieselang and Havelland. The municipality of Brieselang, with around 12,000 inhabitants, has unanimously supported the Edeka project.
The logistics centre will utilise modern IT systems to evaluate sales data in real-time and adapt the goods supply to demand, thereby reducing shortages in the markets served. Edeka aims to obtain certification according to the guidelines of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) for the sustainability of the construction.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Edeka also plans to convert its entire truck fleet to bio-LNG by 2026. Currently, 500 vehicles already run on this fuel, and in the future, there will be 650. The logistics centre will also incorporate ecological standards into its planning, including the installation of solar photovoltaic systems on the roof areas of the warehouse.
Public institutions and organizations involved in supporting and planning the implementation of Edeka's logistics centre in Brieselang, Havelland, include the local municipality of Brieselang, the district administration of Havelland, regional planning authorities, and relevant state ministries for infrastructure and economic development, as well as environmental agencies responsible for permitting and zoning.
Uwe Gramsch, building authority manager, stated that the administration is now responsible for concrete planning work, including traffic and noise issues and implementing the feasibility study. The feasibility study will show which infrastructure measures are necessary for the project and how they can be implemented.
Edeka will be looking for personnel in professions such as vehicle mechatronics, electrical engineering, and logistics, and will also offer training positions. More than 350 Edeka retailers in Berlin and Brandenburg will be supplied with goods from the centre. The logistics centre will be located north of the A10 in the area of the goods traffic centre.
