Expanded Seating Capacity of Tables in Rehm and Dinand Accommodates Everyone comfortably
In the heart of the College of the Holy Cross, the unique community spirit is on full display, with students of all ages and residence halls sharing space for study and meals. This communal living extends to the library and dining halls, which, while serving their primary functions, also hold the potential to foster a unique sense of camaraderie.
As the winter months and the final season approach, the community is encouraged to consider a new status quo in these shared spaces. With the increasing stress and tensions that come with the approaching finals, it's more important than ever to break down social barriers and encourage interaction.
The library, specifically Rehm and Dinand reading rooms, can be as crowded as a mall during Black Friday. However, the expectation of established study groups and the practice of avoiding occupied seats can prevent the library from being a place for socializing or forming new connections.
Recently, Dinand Library has extended its operating hours, now open for 24 hours. This change could provide more opportunities for students to interact and form new connections. The article "Dinand Library Now Open 24 Hours" by Caitlin Wiffler '27, found in the "Eggplant" section, delves deeper into this development.
The practice of avoiding occupied seats can reinforce cliques and prevent groups from mingling with classmates outside their circles. The article "A Holy Cross How To: Navigating Finals Weeks" in the "News" section suggests challenging oneself to sit with strangers and consider the possibilities of bonds, friendships, and conversations that can transpire outside the confines of a pre-established social clique.
In an effort to change the situation in the Dinand Library, an interview with Genevieve Garlaneau '21 was conducted by Stacey Kaliabakos '23. The interview, titled "Working in Dinand: An Interview with Genevieve Garlaneau '21", can be found in the "features" section.

In addition, Lizzie Swanson '28 wrote an article about navigating finals weeks at Holy Cross. The article, while focusing on the stress and tensions associated with finals, also touches upon the importance of community and interaction during this period.
As we move towards the end of the academic year, let's strive to make the most of our shared spaces and embrace the opportunities they offer for fostering a stronger sense of community at Holy Cross.
