Expanded Opportunities for Foreign Professionals in Australia's Migration Skills Selection Process due to New Expert Occupation Categories

The Department of Home Affairs has announced the Core Skills Occupation List and the new Skills in Demand Visa, providing expanded opportunities for Australian employers and skilled migration applicants in the technology sector. This move is in response to the growing demand for specialised expertise in fields such as cybersecurity and data science, as highlighted by ACS CEO Josh Griggs.

According to the Digital Pulse report by ACS, Australia is projected to need 1.3 million technology workers by 2030. This demand is particularly evident in the cybersecurity field, where demand is expected to double by 2030. To address this need, ACS has expanded its Migration Skills Assessment program to include ten new specialist occupations.

The updated program now covers 35 ANZSCO codes, up from 25, in the technology sector. The newly added roles include Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Cyber Security Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Penetration Tester, Cyber Governance Risk and Compliance Specialist, Cyber Security Advice and Assessment Specialist, Cyber Security Analyst, Cyber Security Architect, and Cyber Security Operations Coordinator.

ACS CEO Josh Griggs reaffirms the organisation's commitment to helping skilled migrants build rewarding careers in technology while supporting the nation's economic growth and innovation through diverse pathways. ACS is supporting employers and skilled professionals in accessing new pathways, and has integrated industry-recognised vendor certifications into some of its migration pathways, allowing professionals to demonstrate currency and specialisation in their skills.

ACS will continue providing comprehensive guidance and webinars to assist applicants and migration agents with the Migration Skills Assessment process. Skilled migration is a vital pillar in ensuring Australia remains competitive on the global stage, as stated by ACS CEO Josh Griggs.

The new Skills in Demand Visa and the expansion of the Migration Skills Assessment program are essential for addressing the nation's demand for specialised expertise in fields like cybersecurity and data science. By providing new pathways for skilled professionals, Australia can ensure it has the workforce it needs to drive innovation and growth in the technology sector.
