Exhibition by Martine Rose commemorates the groundbreaking, queer spirit of Bronski Beat musical group
In the heart of London's art scene, Sadie Coles HQ on Davies Street is currently playing host to a captivating visual experience - 'Everything Must Change', a film by Martine Rose and Sharna Osborne. The exhibition runs until the 24th of February, 2025.
At the helm of this three-channel video masterpiece, which plays across mammoth-sized LED screens, is the iconic Bronski Beat frontman, Jimmy Somerville. His rendition of 'Everything Must Change' can be heard throughout the film, a choice that was led by Somerville himself and resulted in a sound that exceeded Martine Rose's wildest dreams.
The collaboration between Martine Rose, Sharna Osborne, and Jimmy Somerville began in 2016, and the project has been a deeply personal one for Martine Rose. The film was inspired by her experience at a ballet performance at Sadler's Wells and was further influenced by 'The Infinite Mix' at the Hayward Gallery.
The production of 'Everything Must Change' was done in Osborne's signature VHS-coded style, with a fuzzy mix of colours that adds to the film's unique aesthetic. Martine Rose and Sharna Osborne met with Jimmy Somerville for a coffee in Soho to discuss the project, a meeting that marked the beginning of a creative partnership.
Despite their lack of film or music production experience, Jimmy Somerville trusted Martine Rose and Sharna Osborne with his music, a commitment that was striking. For Martine Rose, who grew up listening to Somerville's music and considers him a British icon, this collaboration was an unbelievable privilege.
Martine Rose finds that the film invites viewers into something real, a respite from contemporary culture that forces people to see everything through lenses or screens. Bringing music into a gallery space allows for a momentary break from reality and encourages introspection, according to Martine Rose.
'Everything Must Change' is more than just a film; it's a testament to the power of collaboration, the emotional impact of music in unfamiliar contexts, and the transformative potential of art. Don't miss out on this immersive experience at Sadie Coles HQ before it closes on the 24th of February, 2025.
