Exciting lineup at the city museum for Memorial Day celebration

On September 14, 2025, the city of Göttingen invites you to step back in time and delve into its rich history as part of the Day of Open Heritage. The programme, hosted by the Municipal Museum of Göttingen, promises a fascinating exploration of the city's past, with a variety of thematic tours focusing on history, architecture, and archaeology.

The day's events kick off at 11:00 with two tours: "Göttingen's historic old town - center and identity factor" and "City. Power. Faith," which offers an insight into the Reformation period exhibition in Göttingen. Both tours will meet at the GÀnseliesel fountain on the market square in front of the old town hall, Markt 9.

At 12:00, the "City History in the Forecourt" tour will present the museum garden as a living ensemble of building and garden heritage. Meanwhile, the "From Hardenberg Court to the Post Office" tour, organised by the Göttingen Stadtmuseum, will focus on the building and usage history of the museum ensemble at 17:00.

For those interested in archaeology, the "Archaeological Finds Tell Stories" tour, starting at 14:00, will include a visit to the Gothic cellar in the post office and insights from the museum building's renovation from 2017. Another highlight at 14:00 is the tour on "Violence, War, and Turmoil. Göttingen in Transition," which discusses historical war events during the Thirty Years' War.

The day's events also include a tour titled "Religion in the Personification of Women," focusing on religious women in medieval art and featuring precious sculptures at 16:00.

Throughout the day, the Heimatverein Grone e. V. will open its local history collection and offer exhibitions and tours at the Citizen's House Grone. The museum will be open from 11:00 to 18:00, and entry to the museum and public tours are free, with no registration required. The meeting point for all tours is the foyer of the museum in Hardenberg Court, Ritterplan 7-8.

During the tours, employees of the Lower Heritage Protection Office will provide information about the building time, architectural style, and, if known, architects and builders at selected buildings.
