Ponciroli has emphasised that he will not "redo" The Goonies, but instead, envision the sequel as a continuation of the original story. The plot revolves around a new treasure hunt for the characters, with potential locations including a rock, a lighthouse, and an abandoned old restaurant.
Legendary director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg had developed ideas for a new chapter in the past. Ponciroli's work on the script is progressing well, with a first draft completed and the second draft about 95% complete.
However, the production of the sequel is still in its early stages, with no release date confirmed as yet. The involvement of the original cast members remains uncertain, as there was a debate among them about the possibility of a sequel. Some were against the idea, while others were ready to return.
