Ex-Home Depot Worker Jailed for $4M Gift Card Fraud to Fuel Gambling Addiction

A former Home Depot employee has been sentenced to prison after stealing more than $4 million in gift cards from the home improvement retailer. The fraud was uncovered when a large discrepancy appeared in the company's gift card records. Investigators found she had exploited her position to fund a gambling habit.

The employee, who had worked at Home Depot since 2008, activated 8,325 gift cards by creating fake 'corporate event' orders. She then deleted the records to cover her tracks. Each card was worth around $500, totalling over $4 million in stolen funds from the home depot.

The scheme came to light when a $4 million shortfall was spotted in the gift card ledger. A joint investigation by the US Department of Homeland Security's Secret Service and Home Depot's gift card team followed. Authorities confirmed the money had been used to support a high-stakes gambling lifestyle.

In court, the employee pleaded guilty to access device fraud. She received a prison sentence of three years and one month. Additionally, she was ordered to repay $3,946,776 in restitution to the home depot.

The case adds to a growing trend of gift card fraud in the US. Over the past five years, the Federal Trade Commission has recorded more than 85,000 such schemes, with losses exceeding $500 million. Home Depot has stated it is now focused on moving forward and continuing to serve its customers.
