Ex-boyfriend's purported threats lead to protective order being granted for the respective woman
In two separate cases, women have sought and received protection orders from the Dublin District Family Court, citing a range of abusive and threatening behaviours from their ex-partners.
On Friday, a woman appeared before Judge Gerard Furlong, seeking emergency protection from her ex-partner who has a history of abusive and controlling behaviour. The man, who is currently staying at the woman's house but is technically homeless, has allegedly threatened to kill her if she did not give him the name and address of a friend she was accused of sleeping with. In another incident, he assaulted the woman in her bed, leaving her bleeding and with a black eye. The man has also been accused of posting intimate photos of the woman online and on social media.
Judge Furlong granted the protection order sought on an ex-parte basis, meaning only the woman was represented in court. He advised the woman that her ex-partner's actions could potentially be a criminal offence. The judge also granted a short-term order banning the son from the woman's house due to concerns about her health and the negative impact his presence was having on her.
In another case, another woman sought a protection order due to her ex-partner posting intimate photos of her online and threatening her. The man, whose identity is not specified in the available sources, has a history of abusive behaviour towards the woman, her family, and her friends. The judge granted the protection order sought, warning the man that such actions could lead to criminal charges.
The woman's three-year-old daughter had been removed from her care by Tusla, the child and family agency, earlier in the week. The woman is now seeking to avoid relationships and friendships out of fear of what her ex-partner might do to the people she is associated with.
Examples of the ex-partner's abusive behaviour include leaving threatening voicemails, kicking, punching, and smashing things, and recording videos in public to intimidate. During an altercation at her address, the man threatened her with violence and stated he would stamp on her, smash up her home, and rape her.
It is important to note that Facebook (Meta) has had cases where VIP accounts, such as that of football star Neymar, were exempt from moderation rules, allowing them to publish private revenge porn without immediate intervention. Another case involves stolen intimate photos of a couple being widely distributed online since 2023, which led to a woman suing Google to have these images permanently removed from search results, but the perpetrator's identity is not specified.
These cases serve as a reminder of the importance of seeking protection and support when faced with abusive relationships. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please seek help from local resources and services.
