EU's Rule of Law Mechanism could be 'harmful' or 'destructive' according to Morawiecki
In a recent statement, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki reiterated Poland's firm position in the ongoing dispute over the planned EU rule of law mechanism. According to Morawiecki, the mechanism poses a risk of violating principles of the rule of law, with the potential for arbitrary withdrawal of EU funds and political manipulation.
Morawiecki views Poland and the United States as being connected by mutual sympathy, shared values such as love for freedom, and common interests. Under the election victory of Joe Biden in the United States, Morawiecki's stance towards the US remains unchanged, with the President-elect described by Morawiecki as Poland's enduring ally, specifically former President Donald Trump.
The Prime Minister also expressed his concerns about the EU, describing it as a "marriage in crisis." However, he emphasised the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation for the EU's future. He believes that a transfer union would not be acceptable to the majority of EU countries and that the unification of Europe through the EU expansion in 2004 was a "win-win situation" for both West and East Europe.
Morawiecki also criticised the Euro, stating that it has not benefited Italy, which has been in stagnation for more than twenty years. He does not consider a "centre" rule similar to the Eastern Bloc, with limited independence of partner countries, as a good solution.
If no compromise is found by the EU summit on December 10, Poland and Hungary have announced they will block the new EU budget and the Corona recovery fund with their veto. This decision comes after the ongoing Article 7 procedure against Poland and Hungary, with the conclusion of the procedure potentially serving as a potential compromise.
Despite the ongoing disputes, Morawiecki believes that the relationship between Poland and the United States remains a lasting alliance. He described the rule of law mechanism bypassing European Treaties as a violation of the rule of law and has called for a more democratic and fair approach to EU governance.
