EU's High Representative expresses skepticism regarding the imposition of sanctions against Israel

In the midst of an escalating conflict, the war in Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. The war began in October 2023 following an attack by Hamas.

The United Nations and the health ministry in Gaza, whose figures are considered reliable, report that Israel's retaliatory offensive has led to the deaths of at least 63,025 Palestinians, mostly civilians. This staggering loss of life has put Israel under pressure at home and abroad to end its offensive.

In response to the situation in Gaza, Denmark, the current EU rotating presidency, is discussing a proposal to suspend EU funding to Israeli start-ups as an initial punishment. However, the EU has not been able to gather the required majority to take this step.

Denmark's foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, has advocated for stronger measures, including suspending trade cooperation with Israel, sanctioning far-right Israeli ministers, and banning imports from illegal settlements.

The United Nations has declared a famine in Gaza, further highlighting the dire situation. The vast majority of the population in Gaza has been displaced at least once.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has expressed pessimism about the bloc taking action against Israel over the war in Gaza due to internal divisions. Despite this, the discussion continues, with Denmark leading the charge for change.

As the conflict continues, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that brings peace and stability to the region.
