Europe's Tourism Industry Evolving as a Potential New Generation of Manufacturing Sector
In 2024, Europe solidified its position as the most visited continent, welcoming an impressive 747 million tourists. This surge in visitors was highlighted in a study conducted by the European Travel Commission (ETC), which also emphasised the tourism industry's significant contribution to the continent's economy.
Spain and France, in particular, stood at the forefront of European tourism in 2024. The tourism industry's direct and indirect contribution to GDP in both countries regained levels equivalent to or slightly higher than pre-pandemic levels. In Spain, this contribution reached 14.5%, surpassing the manufacturing sector's 10.9%. In France, it was 8.8%, comparable to the manufacturing sector's 9.7%.
Spain attracted a record number of 95 million visitors in 2024, a testament to the country's enduring appeal. Tourism employment accounts for around 14% of total employment in Spain, reflecting the sector's integral role in the national economy.
France, too, saw a robust tourism industry. The sector's contribution to GDP remained consistent with the manufacturing sector, underscoring its importance. The need for skilled labor in the tourism sector is urgent to sustain the sector's growth.
Preliminary estimates suggest continued growth in the European tourism industry. Countries such as Albania and Serbia experienced significant growth in visitor numbers and revenue between 2023 and 2024, with revenue surging by 128% and 126%, respectively.
However, the tourism sector in Europe is facing a higher vacancy rate for tourism jobs compared to the EU average, at 3.3%. This underscores the need for concerted efforts to attract and retain skilled workers to maintain the sector's momentum.
The tourism industry is a vital engine for the economic advancement of most European countries. Its continued growth and success are not just numbers on a page, but signs of a thriving, vibrant continent that welcomes visitors with open arms.
