Europe's fading dominance tests its future as a global mediator

The global balance of power is shifting, with new players gaining influence while traditional Western dominance fades. Experts suggest Europe still has a key role to play—especially in climate action, democracy, and mediation—but faces growing competition from regional and Southern powers. Recent discussions among academics highlight Europe's changing position. Gabriela Ciot, a professor at Babeș-Bolyai University, points to the rising influence of regional actors like Turkey and Gulf states. Meanwhile, the BRICS bloc and broader Global South nations are pushing alternative visions for global governance.

Andreas Marchetti, from the University of Paderborn and Sciences Po, argues that Europe can still act as a mediator and bridge-builder. Bernardo Ivo Cruz, an international law expert at Nova Law School, adds that the EU could help foster dialogue among democratic nations. Yet, the bloc's ability to shape global affairs is under pressure as new powers assert themselves. Climate leadership remains a priority for the EU. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, reaffirmed the bloc's commitment at the 2025 UN Climate Summit. Jenny Raflik, a specialist at Nantes University, expects Europe to take the lead in climate policy, even as its broader influence wanes.

The EU's future role depends on its ability to adapt. While experts see opportunities in climate action, democracy promotion, and mediation, the bloc must navigate a world where Southern and regional powers are reshaping global dynamics. The challenge lies in maintaining relevance amid shifting alliances and emerging centres of influence.
