European Space Agency Grants €3.6M Contract to Valerann for Creation of Artificial Intelligence-powered Satellite-based Road Traffic Surveillance System

Valerann, a global leader in AI-powered, data-driven road traffic management solutions, has been awarded a €3.6M co-funded contract from the European Space Agency's Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) program. This funding is considered a significant milestone in Valerann's mission to transform road traffic safety and efficiency.

Valerann's flagship product, Lanternn by Valerann (LbV), helps road operators improve road safety. With the new transformational system, Lanternn by Valerann for networks, Valerann aims to extend its monitoring capabilities to large, complex road networks and rural areas.

LbV uses deep data analytics to process large volumes of current and historical traffic-related data, providing a real-time overview of single corridor road traffic. Satellite positioning information derived from mobile and vehicle navigation applications will play a key role in enabling the capabilities of LbV for networks.

The platform is designed to enhance nationwide road network safety and efficiency. LbV significantly reduces incident detection time, enabling road traffic authorities to adopt a proactive road traffic management approach while achieving a double percentage reduction in serious traffic accidents.

Valerann's cloud platform, Lanternn by Valerann, improves road traffic authorities' situational awareness and provides insights including risk profiling. The initiative aligns with the BASS program's objective of supporting innovative services that leverage space technology and data in key markets, such as transportation.

ESA Space Solutions is supporting Valerann in leveraging satellite data and AI to improve safety on roads. The contract will support the development and demonstration of an AI and satellite data-enabled traffic monitoring and incident detection platform.

Customers of Valerann report double-digit reduction in accidents rate as a result of proactive road management. The goal is to further reduce accidents and improve response times, ultimately saving lives.

Valerann's solution is used by public and private operators in various regions including the US, UK, Europe, and Central and Latin America. The company is supported by a co-financed contract of 3.6 million euros from the European Space Agency in 2023, providing traffic management solutions with customers in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and India.

The new system, Lanternn by Valerann for networks, will feature capabilities for managing national-scale road networks, arterial roads, and intersections. It is also aligned with the EU Global Gateway Strategy's aims for seamless, sustainable, and environmentally friendly international corridor management.

In summary, Valerann's latest funding from the European Space Agency marks a significant step forward in the company's mission to revolutionise road traffic safety and efficiency. With LbV, Valerann aims to provide road traffic authorities with the tools they need to proactively manage road networks, reduce accidents, and ultimately save lives.
