European Parliament Endorses Resolution for the European Year Focusing on Environment, Health, and Consumer Protection
This September, Solingen is inviting residents and visitors alike to delve into the city's rich history and cultural heritage during the annual Day of Open Heritage. The event, taking place on Sunday, September 14th, is organised by the German Foundation for Monument Protection and can be found at www.tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de.
One of the highlights of the day will be the Evangelical Luther Church at Kölner Straße 1a. This neo-Romanesque central building, constructed between 1898 and 1901, will be open for visits from 11:00 to 18:00 on September 13th and from 12:00 to 18:00 on September 14th. Visitors can expect to see ongoing renovation measures and enjoy guided tours offered on the full hour. The community will also present various aspects of the church's history and significance.
Another intriguing destination is the historically protected former company site of P.D. Rasspe Söhne at Stöckenstraße 17. This site, which includes a 1906 warehouse building and a 1920 administrative building, will be open outside its usual hours, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Visitors can explore these buildings through guided tours, along with special exhibitions and talks by a former employee. A photo exhibition and lectures will also supplement the program at the former P.D. Rasspe Sons company site.
However, it's worth noting that the former P.D. Rasspe Sons company site may not be suitable for mobility-impaired visitors due to ongoing construction work. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear.
The Day of Open Heritage in Solingen will also offer a glimpse into the city's industrial history at the former P.D. Rasspe Sons company site at Stockenstraße 17. Here, insights into Solingen's past will be provided, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the city's growth and development.
In addition to the Evangelical Luther Church and the former P.D. Rasspe Sons company site, the Day of Open Heritage will also feature Hofschaft Haasenmühle, an ensemble of timber-frame buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries. Lectures on the history of these buildings will be given every half hour from 11:00 to 17:00 during the Day of Open Heritage.
The goal of the Day of Open Heritage is to raise awareness of the importance of cultural and archaeological heritage. By offering free admission and opening historic buildings to the public, the event aims to inspire a sense of pride and appreciation for Solingen's past and present. This year's motto is "Worth-it: Priceless or Irreplaceable?"
The Day of Open Heritage in Solingen is just one of many events taking place across Germany as part of this nationwide program. So, mark your calendars and join in the celebration of Solingen's heritage on September 14th!
