European Union Steps Up Wildfire Fighting Efforts Across Continent

The European Union (EU) is taking decisive action to combat wildfires that have been ravaging several countries across Europe this summer. The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) is closely monitoring the situation, with the ERCC standing ready to provide support via the Civil Protection Mechanism if requested.

As part of the EU's summer wildfire preparedness, 22 firefighting airplanes are stationed in 10 Member States, and 4 helicopters are deployed in the same regions. These resources are additional to national capacities, serving to boost the number of firefighters in each country they are deployed.

The positioning of these airplanes and helicopters is strategic, with nearly 650 firefighters from 14 European countries strategically positioned for wildfire summer readiness in high-risk areas of France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. The participating countries include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Slovenia.

The EU's summer wildfire preparedness is a coordinated effort to combat wildfires across Europe during the summer season. The aim is to provide additional resources to countries struggling with wildfires, mitigate risks, and enable a faster crisis response.

Firefighters from Bulgaria are working alongside Greek firefighters in Halkidiki, Greece, while Romanian firefighters have assisted local French teams in responding to a fire near Perpignan, France.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism is being utilized for the deployment of these additional airplanes and helicopters. The Mechanism is coordinating and co-financing the deployment, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.

The EU's efforts are not limited to fighting fires; they are also focused on preparedness and prevention. The EU's firefighters are intended to boost the number of firefighters in each country they are deployed, providing a stronger line of defence against wildfires.

The EU's summer wildfire preparedness is a testament to the solidarity and cooperation among EU Member States in times of crisis. By working together, the EU is demonstrating its commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens and its ability to respond effectively to challenges that affect the continent.
