European Commission's Response to Strategy for European Digital ID
European Commission Proposes Revisions to eIDAS Regulation for Improved Cross-border Digital Identity Use
The European Commission has published a roadmap titled "Inception Impact Assessment for Revision of the eIDAS Regulation - European Digital Identity (EUid)" with the aim of modernizing the regulatory framework for digital identity and improving the cross-border use of electronic IDs and trust services in EU member states.
The roadmap outlines three policy options to address the current shortcomings in the eIDAS regulation, which was adopted by the EU in 2014 and establishes a cross-border framework for electronic IDs (eIDs) and electronic trust services in EU member states. The options include revising the existing eIDAS regulation, establishing a new eID for EU citizens, known as EUid, and modernizing the regulatory framework for digital identity.
One of the policy options under consideration is the establishment of EUid, a new eID for EU citizens. The Center for Data Innovation has submitted feedback on this proposal, although the exact nature of the feedback provided remains unspecified.
Another policy option is to revise the eIDAS regulation. The Center for Data Innovation has also provided feedback on the proposed revisions to the eIDAS regulation. The comments aim to improve the cross-border use of electronic IDs and trust services in EU member states.
The comments were made in response to the proposal to modernize the regulatory framework for digital identity and were submitted by the Center for Data Innovation. However, the search results do not provide information on who from the Center for Data Innovation submitted the comments on the European Commission's Inzitationsbericht "Revision der eIDAS-Richtlinie – Europäische Digitalidentität."
The roadmap also proposes addressing the current shortcomings in the eIDAS regulation by revising it. The comments were made in relation to the three policy options outlined in the roadmap.
The eIDAS regulation includes provisions for electronic signatures, time stamps, electronic seals, and other electronic trust services. The comments made by the Center for Data Innovation are expected to contribute to the improvement of these provisions and the overall effectiveness of the eIDAS regulation in facilitating cross-border digital transactions in the EU.
As the European Commission continues to gather feedback on the proposals outlined in the roadmap, it is expected that further revisions to the eIDAS regulation will be made to ensure a more seamless and secure cross-border use of electronic IDs and trust services in EU member states.
