EU Demands Action from Trump

The European Union (EU) and the United States (US) have been working towards a more stable and predictable relationship, as described by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, following the agreement reached in July. However, this harmony may be disrupted if the US responds negatively to the EU's digital laws.

According to Teresa Ribeiro, the EU's antitrust authority head, the EU should not yield to foreign interests and cannot accept any demands or be subject to the will of a third country. Ribeiro has been vocal in urging the EU to defend its regulatory powers, including the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The EU has already implemented the trade agreement by reducing tariffs on certain US goods. However, Ribeiro has warned that the EU may abandon the trade agreement with the US if the US responds negatively to the EU's digital laws. This warning was initially made by Donald Trump, who threatened to impose tariffs and export restrictions against countries whose laws "discriminate" against American tech companies.

In response to these threats, Ribeiro has assured that Brussels would not halt antitrust investigations and the implementation of digital legislation due to pressure from Washington. Companies operating in the EU, including major US tech companies, must comply with the same laws as everyone else, according to Ribeiro.

If new US measures are enacted, Brussels reserves the right to review its commitments under the agreement. Ribeiro reiterated that there would be no concessions in matters of regulation from the EU. She also stated that if there are attempts to reopen negotiations, the question remains whether there will be an agreement at all.

The Financial Times reports this warning made by Teresa Ribeiro, emphasising the potential tension between the two economic powerhouses over digital regulations. The EU's stance on this issue underscores its commitment to maintaining its regulatory sovereignty in the digital sphere, even in the face of pressure from the US.
