Essential Information for German Travelers Regarding Rail Journeys Across Europe
In Europe, travelling by train offers a unique and convenient way to explore various destinations. Here's a snapshot of what you can expect from some of the continent's most popular rail networks.
Snälltåget, the Swedish high-speed train, connects to Hamburg and Berlin for overnight travel to northern destinations in Sweden. For those seeking adventure in Spain, most trains feature a cafeteria offering small dishes, and tickets can be purchased at counters or online.
Poles appreciate discretion and politeness during train travel, and phone calls are allowed but discouraged in the cabin. Luggage limits are non-existent, but bicycle spaces are scarce and often booked. Food can be brought to your seat from the dining car via an app on many Polish trains.
France boasts quieter trains, with children kept quieter by their guardians and passengers asked to make phone calls in the corridor between cars. The French railway operator, SNCF, recommends reserving tickets immediately after the start of sales, which can be up to nine months in advance. Luggage must always be provided with a name tag of the owner.
In Sweden, the rail provider SJ offers family offers for travel with children, allowing for significant savings when booked early. Swedish trains usually have an inviting on-board bistro.
For those venturing into Denmark, passengers are expected to bring their own snacks, while in Italy, train tickets are often surprisingly cheap and trains are relatively punctual. Prices fluctuate depending on occupancy and time of day, so it's worth booking in advance.
Spain boasts the second largest network of high-speed trains in the world, with four major providers: Renfe, Avlo, Ouigo, and Iryo. Delays have been reported on the railway line between Hamburg and Copenhagen due to border controls.
Bicycles are allowed on regional trains in Poland for an extra charge, and on long-distance trains with a reservation. Travellers in France are advised to be early, as access to TGV, Intercité, and TER trains is only guaranteed up to two minutes before departure.
Besides the Polish State Railways (PKP), a private Czech railway company, RegioJet, is operating trial train services in Poland starting September 2025 and plans service launch from December 2025.
Tickets for long-distance travel in Scandinavia can be purchased online, with reservations often included. Travellers can explore most regions by train, including France and Spain.
