escalating diplomatic ties: China seeks partnership with European Union
Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, recently visited China for the fourth time, marking his third visit in just two years. This visit comes amidst a significant trade imbalance between the two countries, with Spain importing goods worth €45 billion in 2024, compared to €7.4 billion in exports.
During his stay in Beijing, Sánchez signed further economic cooperation agreements, highlighting the growing relationship between the two nations. However, he also emphasized the need for more balanced relations, calling on China to listen to Spain and Europe's demands.
Sánchez's visit follows a warning from Washington, with Finance Minister Scott Bessent advising against leaning too heavily towards China, stating, "That would be cutting your own throat." This criticism echoes the international trade turmoil caused by the Trump administration.
Despite this, the communist government of China is trying to position itself as a reliable and stable partner amidst these tensions. Chinese companies have been increasingly investing in Spain, attracted by its low energy costs and the potential to make Spain a hub for Chinese firms.
This high-level visit by a Spanish leader is not an isolated incident. A high-level visit by EU representatives, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President António Costa, is being planned for July. While there is no confirmed information about von der Leyen's visit in July 2022, she did visit Beijing together with the French President Emmanuel Macron in April 2023.
The US is likely to watch this exchange between China and Europe critically, as the balance of global trade continues to shift. During his previous visit to Beijing last fall, Sánchez called for building "bridges between the European Union and China," a sentiment that seems to be shared by many European leaders as they navigate the complexities of international trade.
