Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Erupts for the 32nd Time Since December 2021
The Kilauea volcano, located on Hawaii Island and one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupted once again on Tuesday. This marks the 32nd time the volcano has erupted since December 2021.
The eruption occurred from multiple vents within Halemaumau Crater, with lava emerging from the north vent at 6.35am local time on August 19th. A third vent has also started erupting within the crater.
The eruption did not pose a threat to homes, as all lava from this eruption has been contained within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The height of the eruption was approximately 100 meters.
Kilauea's current eruption began in December 2022, resuming after a brief period of inactivity following the 2020 eruption. The exact timing of the last eruption before the 32nd eruption of Kilauea in August 2020 is not explicitly stated, but it is known that Kilauea had a near-continuous eruption phase from 1983 to 2018, followed by eruptions in 2018 (lower east rift zone), and then in December 2020.
The Kilauea volcano is situated approximately 320km south of Honolulu, the state's largest city, which is located on Oahu. Kilauea volcano is the largest of the Hawaiian archipelago.
This latest eruption of Kilauea volcano is expected to continue in the coming days, marking the 31st time it has erupted since December 2021. The volcano's ongoing activity serves as a reminder of its dynamic and powerful nature, attracting scientists and visitors from around the world.
