Erupting Volcano: A Fiery Spectacle

In the world of cinema, two intriguing films have taken centre stage at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" and Gianfranco Rosi's "Sotto le nuvole" have captured the attention of audiences and critics alike.

In "Frankenstein", Oscar Isaac takes on the title role of Victor Frankenstein. The story begins with an Arctic expedition finding the injured Frankenstein in the ice. Christoph Waltz plays Henrich Harlander, Frankenstein's benefactor, who aids in the creation of the monster, portrayed by Jacob Elordi. Initially, the creature is only able to roar, but the story unfolds as the monster seeks a place in the world and makes a plea for acceptance. The laboratory, set in a former water tower, is filled with pipes and apparatuses adorned with patina, adding an eerie atmosphere to the film.

Jacob Elordi, who replaced Andrew Garfield due to scheduling conflicts, found it challenging to make the monster compelling. However, his portrayal of the creature has been praised for its depth and emotion. The story is divided into two parts, first following Frankenstein's account and then giving the creature its voice. Mia Goth plays Elizabeth Lavenza, and Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz complete the cast.

Meanwhile, "Sotto le nuvole" offers a different perspective, focusing on the daily lives of several people in Naples. Gianfranco Rosi's documentary follows Syrian sailors unloading Ukrainian grain from a freighter in the port near Naples, firefighters exploring the tunnels of grave robbers or answering various emergency calls, and a group of Japanese archaeologists working to uncover the remains of the Villa dei Papiri. The film features the threat of the Phlegraean Fields volcanic region near Naples, which has shown increased activity with earthquakes for two years.

Gianfranco Rosi alternates sober images of his protagonists at work with shots of cloud fields or rising volcanic ash, creating a stark contrast between the beauty of nature and the hardship of human life. Julia Roberts was also spotted at the festival, attending the premiere of the film "After the Hunt" on the red carpet.

In conclusion, both Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" and Gianfranco Rosi's "Sotto le nuvole" are must-see films at this year's Venice Film Festival. Each offers a unique perspective on life, love, and the human condition, making them a fascinating addition to the world of cinema.
