Environmental guard in Lüneburg area now reinforced with new directive for protection
In the picturesque district of Lüneburg, a strategic approach to combat greenhouse gas emissions has been unveiled. The integrated climate protection concept, now available for public perusal at this link, targets key emission hotspots within the region.
Urban centers, industrial sites, and major traffic routes are identified as the main sources of emissions, concentrating output from transport, energy use, and industry. By focusing on these areas, significant reductions in emissions can be achieved.
Janna Hoveida, head of the department for climate protection, regional development, and economy, explains that concrete climate goals have been defined within the concept. One of the central measures includes the acquisition of electric buses by MOIN to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The district's own properties will also be transitioned to renewable energy sources, with a target date yet to be specified. More opportunities for Photovoltaic (PV) systems will be created on district-owned buildings to further reduce emissions.
The climate change in Lüneburg has led to a rise in temperatures by approximately 1.7 degrees Celsius compared to 1880, primarily due to the release of greenhouse gases from the burning of oil and gas. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the district is participating in the European Energy Award (eea) certification procedure.
The energetic renovation of private residential property will be promoted as a central measure, encouraging homeowners to contribute to the climate protection work. Everyone, including administration, private individuals, and companies, is called upon to play their part.
The Lower Saxony Climate Protection Act mandates all districts to create a climate protection concept for their administration. The Lüneburg district council has adopted the goals set out in the concept and tasked the administration with implementing the measures.
The climate protection work in Lüneburg is made measurable and continuously reviewable through clearly defined intermediate goals. By 2040, the emissions of traffic in the district are to be reduced by 80%. The district administration's own properties and fleet are being converted to electric mobility.
The integrated climate protection concept identifies areas of high greenhouse gas emissions and potential for savings in the district. The main emitters of greenhouse gases in the district area are traffic and private households. A total of 49 new measures have been adopted by the district council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In summary, the district of Lüneburg is taking decisive steps towards a greener future, with a comprehensive climate protection concept that considers the entire district area and encourages participation from all sectors of society.
