Ennepe-Ruhr District Warns: Extreme Drought Threatens Easter Fires

The Ennepe-Ruhr district fire association urges caution this Easter 2025, with a lack of rain leading to extremely dry conditions. The district fire chief, whose name is not specified, advises using only untreated wood and supervising fires at all times.

The district has experienced a severe lack of rain, resulting in extremely dry soil and vegetation. Several forest and field fires have occurred due to these conditions. Before starting an Easter fire, residents must check for permits and local regulations, and report it to the responsible municipality if required.

In previous years, Easter fires have caused injuries and unnecessary responses by fire departments. To prevent this, the fire association advises using only dry, untreated wood residues, branches, and shrub cuttings for fuel. They warn against using trash, treated wood, plastic, or other waste. It is crucial to supervise the fire at all times, have fire extinguishers ready, and consider the current drought conditions.

The fire association emphasizes the importance of allowing the fire to burn down under control and extinguishing all remaining embers completely before leaving the site. Extra caution is required this year, especially with upcoming Easter fires. Choose a safe, non-combustible location for the fire, considering wind direction and potential sparks. Move the fire pile just before burning to protect animals that may have taken shelter in it.
