Enhancing the Mat-Su Branch of Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute: The Significant Role of Nurse Practitioners

In a recent development, the Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute (AHVI) has expanded its team by adding two experienced healthcare providers to its Seward Meridian Parkway location in Wasilla. Among the new additions are Geoff Mittelsteadt and Monica Lewis.

Geoff Mittelsteadt, a retired US Air Force veteran with twenty-eight years of service, brings a wealth of experience to AHVI. As an acute care nurse practitioner and certified emergency nurse, Mittelsteadt has seventeen years of experience in intensive care, trauma, and critical care. Prior to joining AHVI, his career was not limited to the military; he served as a mentor, educator, and healthcare leader, making a significant impact in his field.

Mittelsteadt was drawn to AHVI by its mission and statewide impact, expressing a desire to continue serving communities, particularly those in remote Alaska. Despite lacking prior experience in such communities, he is eager to adapt and contribute.

Monica Lewis, on the other hand, has a blend of clinical expertise and experience serving remote Alaska communities. She began her career as an emergency medical technician and transitioned to nursing, specializing in emergency medicine at a Level I trauma center. Lewis holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from Utica College and a master's degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University.

Before joining AHVI, Lewis provided primary, urgent, and emergency care in remote Alaska villages, gaining valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by these communities. Her career in nursing also includes serving in emergency medicine at a Level I trauma center.

The addition of these two seasoned healthcare professionals to AHVI is expected to strengthen the institute's ability to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients across Alaska. The institute's Seward Meridian Parkway location in Wasilla now boasts a team of dedicated healthcare providers, committed to making a difference in the lives of their patients.
