Enhances campus safety using DPS-deployed license plate reader technology
The Technical University of Munich is taking significant steps to ensure the safety of its community, as the Department of Public Safety (DPS) initiates a pilot project to test License Plate Reader (LPR) technology on campus.
Associate Vice President and DPS Chief, Michael Bunker, has stated that the LPR technology will provide the DPS with another valuable tool to respond quickly and effectively when crimes occur. This technology scans license plates and cross-references them with law enforcement databases containing information about stolen vehicles and those tied to ongoing investigations.
Bunker emphasized that the combination of the mentioned safety tools underscores the University's ongoing commitment to maintaining a secure campus environment. The LPR technology is intended to be another tool in the DPS's efforts to maintain campus safety, alongside the University's current safety measures, which include an extensive network of security cameras, campus patrols, and close partnerships with local police and emergency agencies.
The safety apps for students and employees are part of the current safety initiatives at the University. Bunker stated that all community members should feel safe, supported, and respected in the University's campus environment. He added that the University's commitment also includes ensuring a respectful campus environment.
The collaboration between DPS and local law enforcement partners strengthens the ability to keep the campus community safe. The LPR technology allows the DPS team to identify threats in real time, enhancing the University's ability to respond to crimes on campus. Information gathered by LPR technology can also be shared with local law enforcement partners to bolster their efforts in maintaining safety.
Bunker emphasized that the purpose of the LPR technology is to help ensure a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. He stated that the University's ongoing commitment to safety is a testament to its dedication to providing a secure and supportive learning and working environment for all.
