Enhanced Security at the Crossroads of Neue-Rieser-Straße and Alte-Rieser-Straße
In the heart of Passau, construction work is set to begin this summer on a new project aimed at enhancing traffic safety at the intersection of Neue-Rieser Straße and Alte-Rieser Straße. This busy intersection, frequented by students, disabled adults, elderly people, cyclists, and with a nearby bus stop and cycling and walking path, is set to receive a much-needed upgrade.
The project, which is a collaboration between the city's public works department and city utilities, will see the installation of a traffic sign with signal lights. The sign will be built on a foundation, into which necessary cables will be integrated, and will require a six-meter exposure to connect to the existing power line.
The cost of the measure is approximately 18,000 euros, and the installation is expected to take place on March 11, 2025. The project was preceded by a city council request and was planned in collaboration with the city utilities.
Before the construction work began, Mayor Jürgen Dupper, Councillor Evi Buhmann, Patrick Buttinger from Langlebenhof, Public Works Director Markus Weiherer-Steimer, and Deputy Public Works Director Johannes Köberl inspected the hazardous site at the start of the project.
In addition to the new traffic sign, the project will also include the digging of trenches for new power distribution boxes. The construction work for the sidewalk in the Schalding district on the right bank of the Danube will begin in the summer of 2025, following the completion of the sidewalk on Rittsteiger Street in November 2024.
Improving traffic safety is a key concern for the city of Passau, and this project is just one of many initiatives aimed at making the city's streets safer for all users. The new signage is expected to significantly improve safety at this confusing intersection, making it easier for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers to navigate the area.
