Enhanced School Bus Surveillance by Ontario County Sheriff's Office for Commencement of the New Academic Year

As the 2025-26 school year approaches in Ontario County, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office is taking measures to ensure the safety of students traveling to and from school. Sheriff David J. Cirencione, the head of the Sheriff's Office, has emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic laws around school zones and bus stops.

In a statement, Sheriff Cirencione highlighted the potential dangers of violating traffic laws, stating that such actions put children at serious risk. To combat this, the Sheriff's Office is increasing patrols in school zones and around bus stops. Additional deputies will monitor speeds during peak hours, and they will follow school buses across the county to ensure drivers stop when red lights are flashing and stop arms are extended.

Fines for failing to stop for a school bus can result in five license points and fines up to $400, even when traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway. Speeding in a school zone carries a minimum fine of $90 and at least three points on a driver's license. Motorists are asked to plan ahead and make safety a priority as the school year gets underway.

The Sheriff's Office is also encouraging residents to leave extra time in the mornings to avoid rushing, as rushing can lead to dangerous decisions behind the wheel.
