Enhanced Rail Connectivity in Mizoram: The Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line Brings a Revolution
The much-anticipated Bairabi-Sairang railway project in Mizoram, the second biggest infrastructure project in the state after the Aizawl Airport, has been completed and officially inaugurated. The project, undertaken at a revised sanctioned cost of ₹5,021 crore, connects Sairang, 15 km from Aizawl, to Bairabi, near the Assam border.
The project was initiated on November 29, 2014, when Prime Minister Modi remotely unveiled the plaque for the new railway line from Bairabi to Sairang. The project has been a significant step towards enhancing Mizoram's connectivity with other states and boosting tourism in the region.
On May 27, 2016, Prime Minister Modi virtually flagged off a passenger train between Bairabi and Silchar, marking the beginning of the train services on this new line. The railway line will connect Mizoram to Silchar in Assam and other states of the country.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway project provides direct connectivity to Aizawl from Bairabi. The new railway line also establishes Mizoram as the fourth North-Eastern State with its capital city linked to the national railway network.
The project was undertaken in phases, with the Bairabi to Hortoki section commissioned in July 2024, followed by Hortoki-Kawnpui in June 2025, Kawnpui-Mualkhang in the same month, and Mulakhang-Sairang in the same month. Bridge no 196 on the line has a height of 114 m.
The Commissioner of Railway Safety, North East Frontier circle, inspected the final route of the Bairabi-Sairang project between Hortoki and Sairang in June 2025. Dinesh Chand Deshwal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northern Circle, conducted the inspection, with Shri Janak Kumar Garg serving as the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety at that time.
The first broad gauge commercial freight train, consisting of 42 wagons loaded with rice, successfully arrived at Bairabi station on March 21, 2016. The project is expected to provide numerous benefits to students, medical patients, and business persons in Mizoram.
A cab driver named Sanga expressed his delight, stating that the train service would help his daughter, studying at Silchar, visit home more frequently. Bhodahapur station, a major junction on the line, connects to other cities, further enhancing Mizoram's connectivity.
With the completion and inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang railway project, Mizoram has taken a significant step towards becoming more integrated with the rest of the country, opening up new opportunities for tourism, commerce, and improved living conditions for its residents.
