Enhanced Hygiene in Public Venues

In an effort to combat the issue of littering on public surfaces and address potential threats to both humans and the environment, the Senate of Bremen has decided to assign the responsibility of removing illegal waste deposits exceeding 100 liters to the Bremen Waste Management (DBS).

This decision aims to simplify waste reporting for citizens, as they can now report to one responsible entity. The new allocation is also expected to address the confusion caused by different carriers being responsible for various public surfaces, potentially improving the coordination of waste removal efforts.

Senator Kathrin Moosdorf, responsible for Environment, Climate, and Science, will examine all legal prerequisites for DBS to operate on all public surfaces. The senator will ensure that the new task allocation is in line with the necessary legal requirements.

Last year, DBS removed approximately 6,000 deposits of more than 100 liters on its assigned public surfaces, at a cost of around 900,000 euros. Rough estimates suggest that DBS could handle up to 8,000 such loads in the future, indicating a significant increase in waste removal capacity.

The new task allocation is focused on larger waste deposits and is aimed at improving the efficiency of waste removal on public surfaces. The goal is for DBS to be able to operate on all public surfaces as early as the first quarter of the coming year.

The new allocation is also expected to ensure prompt action, potentially reducing delays in waste removal. With faster clearance of illegal waste deposits, the city of Bremen can work towards maintaining a cleaner and safer environment for its citizens.

This move by the Senate is a positive step towards addressing the issue of littering and waste management in Bremen, and it is hoped that it will lead to a more organised and efficient approach to waste removal on public surfaces.
