Energy companies in Odisha introduce a one-kilowatt rooftop solar adoption plan based on the ULA model.
In a significant move towards promoting renewable energy, Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms have announced a special one-kilowatt Rooftop Solar (RTS) scheme. The initiative, rolled out under the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) Model, is aimed at making clean energy accessible to middle-class and low-income households.
Gajanan S Kale, Chief of Odisha Distribution Business & CEO of TPNODL, spearheading the announcement, stated that the RTS scheme is designed to benefit households who find the upfront cost prohibitive. The scheme is part of the Government of India's PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Setting up a 1 kW solar system typically requires an investment of Rs 65,000-Rs 75,000, but under the ULA model, consumers are required to make a one-time payment of Rs 5,000. The bulk of the cost is met through central and state subsidies.
Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms will handle end-to-end execution, including installation, quality assurance, and after-sales service. The RTS scheme offers a 5-year warranty on system components and a 25-year warranty on the solar panels.
The scheme includes hassle-free acquisition, as consumers only need to provide a consent form and make the one-time contribution. A 1 kW rooftop solar system can generate around 100 units of electricity per month, leading to average annual savings of nearly Rs 5,000.
The state government is providing a subsidy of Rs 25,000 for a one-kilowatt rooftop solar system, while the central government is providing a subsidy of Rs 55,000. The net meter will be provided by the discoms, and the cost of the solar generation meter will be borne by the consumer.
With this initiative, Odisha Discoms aim to accelerate mass adoption of rooftop solar, empowering households to generate their own clean energy. The RTS scheme is expected to reduce dependence on conventional power and actively contribute to India's renewable energy revolution.
