Energy collaboration as a possible blueprint for the future? (Heinemann's thoughts)
In the heart of Hamburg, Germany, the renowned family business, Gebr. Heinemann, is making significant strides in sustainability and energy transition. This journey is particularly evident at their 46,000 square meter warehouse in the Gewerbepark Allermohe, a location that is part of the future-proof Cluster Bridge project.
Joel-Florian Beck, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Gebr. Heinemann, underscores the company's commitment to social responsibility. As a fifth-generation family business, sustainability is deeply ingrained in their operations.
Gebr. Heinemann is leading the charge in achieving net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2030. They also aim to reduce emissions in Scope 3 by 50% compared to 2019. To this end, the warehouse is equipped with a photovoltaic system, although the energy needs cannot be fully covered by this system alone.
The Cluster Bridge project, a cross-cluster initiative funded by the EU and the city of Hamburg, is a collaborative effort between Gebr. Heinemann, Buderus, Dachser, and Marx. The project seeks to improve the future viability of the Allermรถhe commercial park by sharing the energy supply of the companies.
Neighbouring companies Buderus and Dachser produce more green energy than they need, creating an opportunity for energy sharing. A feasibility study is currently in preparation to examine the economic and regulatory aspects of this energy sharing, with potential for energy supply solutions such as heat pumps and battery storage.
The Cluster Bridge project is part of KLIMAready, an initiative aimed at promoting Greentech innovations in Hamburg. By participating in this project, Gebr. Heinemann is not only contributing to a greener future for their own operations but also for the entire commercial park.
