End of September Marks the Shutdown of Blogger Favorite Typepad
In the early 2000s, Typepad made its debut as a groundbreaking blogging software, developed by Six Apart. Initially designed to make Movable Type more accessible to a wider audience, Typepad played a significant role in popularizing online diaries during this period.
Six Apart, the company behind Typepad, had initially released Movable Type as open source under the GPL. However, rapid expansion pursued by the company led to a change in the licensing of the previously free software, causing many users to switch to competitor WordPress. This shift was a significant factor in Typepad falling behind in the blogging market.
In March of 2021, Typepad announced an export function for its users, allowing them to extract their data until September 30 for use on other platforms like WordPress. Despite the end of Typepad, Movable Type continues to exist as a separate entity.
Typepad was not primarily used for personal blogs but was utilized by various media organizations. In its heyday, Typepad played a significant role in popularizing online diaries, setting the stage for the current blogging landscape.
As we approach September 30, Typepad will cease operations. Users will no longer be able to log into Typepad, and all accounts and associated services will be permanently deleted. From this date, Typepad will also stop accepting payments, and any paid amounts will be refunded.
Despite its upcoming demise, the initial dominance of Movable Type in the blogging scene is still notable. Movable Type as open source ended, but its impact on the blogging world remains evident.
Typepad, launched in the year 2000, will be missed by many who experienced the rise and fall of this pioneering blogging software. As we bid farewell to Typepad, we remember its contributions to the world of blogging and online diaries.
