Encouraging Readership in Children Through Iconic Super Why Personages

Super Why is a popular PBS KIDS show designed to teach preschool children reading skills through interactive adventure stories. The series, produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises, has a unique approach, hiding reading and comprehension lessons within well-known stories.

At the heart of Super Why is the leader of the Super Readers, Whyatt Beanstalk, a character known for his leadership, responsibility, and calm demeanor. He is joined by a team of colourful characters, each with their own unique abilities.

Little Red Riding Hood, a bold and sassy girl, enjoys playing with Little Boy Blue and her gang. Despite being small and gentle, Littlest Pig often encounters bullying from bigger, dominant individuals. Yet, he is known for his determination and quick thinking, and possesses Alpha-Pig powers which he uses to defend himself.

Princess Pea, the daughter of a princess from 'The Princess and the Pea', is energetic, compassionate, and occasionally stubborn. Littlest Pig, on the other hand, has big ambitions and loves building things inspired by his father's profession as a construction worker.

Woofster, a member of the Super Readers team, does not have his own Why Flyer and usually rides with the other Super Readers. His superpower is his ability to look up words in a dictionary, helping the Super Readers understand difficult situations and learn new words. Woofster's costume features a dictionary hanging from his royal blue cape, and he can talk when transformed.

Red, a main character of Super Why, lives near her Grandma's house and has a pet puppy that she loves. She is friendly and caring, but can be temperamental and childish when things do not go her way.

Super Why blends interactive activities with powerful storytelling, making learning personal for children. Each episode features a character who encounters a problem that can be solved with preschool-level skills, providing plenty of practice in reading skills through interactive characters and literacy-based games.

The series focuses on teaching various reading skills such as letter identification, spelling, decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and handwriting. It aims to foster a love for reading and learning in children, making books a lifelong resource. Moreover, higher-order reading skills such as theme-comprehension are learned through the series.
