Encouraged to Adopt Innovation and Dual Vocational Education
Equity Group Foundation Empowers Next Generation of Innovators
The Equity Group Foundation (EGF) continues to shape the future of education in Kenya, with a focus on nurturing young minds to become leaders in the technology sector.
Over the years, EGF's scholarship programs have benefited more than 60,000 students across the country, providing them with opportunities to excel in technology and innovation. This year alone, 128 scholars have joined prestigious institutions abroad through the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), and 9,700 paid internships have been facilitated.
The 16th Annual Education and Leadership Congress, held during the August school holidays, brought together 7,806 students from refugee camps in Dadaab and Kakuma. The event, themed "The Innovation Generation: Igniting Ideas, Creating Impact", aimed to equip learners with critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
The two-day regional mentorship event featured interactive plenary sessions with corporate leaders, academics, clergy, and government officials. Samuel John Ipasso, Sub County Director of Education in Northeastern Kenya, highlighted the holistic approach of EGF's mentorship model, while Hassan Mohamed, Principal of Dadaab Secondary School, urged students to embrace innovation not only in the classroom but also in their everyday lives, stressing the importance of problem-solving skills.
Joseph Ochura, Teachers Service Commission Director for Turkana West, emphasized the importance of creativity, adaptability, and practical skills in the evolving world of work. He stated that academic knowledge alone is no longer considered sufficient, and students are expected to be innovative in their studies.
Partnerships with global firms like Microsoft, Cisco, and AWS ensure that young scholars acquire cutting-edge skills to meet the demands of the digital economy. The Tech Apprenticeship Program has provided hands-on experience in fields such as HealthTech, AgTech, InsurTech, and LegalTech to 415 alumni.
Dr. James Mwangi, EGF Executive Chairman, stated that the scholarships shape well-rounded leaders of tomorrow. Through the programs, students are encouraged to focus on technology, innovation, and dual courses as they prepare for a competitive labor market.
The Equity Leaders Program (ELP) has secured 1,098 international university placements for scholars, and EGF's network of young leaders has grown to 29,515 in the region. The scholarships provided by Equity Group Foundation intertwine world-class education, mentorship, and strong ethical values to create true agents of change.
This year's Education and Leadership Congress was a testament to EGF's commitment to fostering innovation and creating a brighter future for Kenya's youth.
