New Emma-Kann Primary School Set to Open in Frankfurt's Europaviertel

Good news for the school community in Frankfurt's Europaviertel! The long-awaited Emma-Kann Primary School is scheduled to be completed this summer, bringing an end to more than seven years of provisional operation in container classrooms.

The four-story building, designed by Dohle + Lohse Architekten, will accommodate up to five classes per grade and will feature spaces for all-day care, a cafeteria, administrative and teacher areas, and a two-court sports hall. The school has been designed with a compact layout and clearly defined functional areas, ensuring an efficient and organised learning environment.

The new school building is part of Frankfurt's school construction offensive, and its name is intended to send a pedagogical signal and strengthen the school community's identification with the new school. The facility, previously known as the Europaviertel Primary School, will be renamed the Emma-Kann Primary School in honour of Frankfurt educator Emma Kann, who was a champion of educational reform and the rights of children.

The school will also house a daycare centre for children under and over three years old, making it a one-stop solution for families in the area. The sports hall is partially sunken into the ground to reduce the building's height, contributing to a more harmonious integration with the surrounding urban landscape.

Originally, the completion of the Emma-Kann-Grundschulzentrum was scheduled for 2023, but delays due to supply chain issues and rising costs have pushed the date back to summer 2025. Despite the setbacks, the city of Frankfurt remains optimistic about the handover of the school in time for the start of the new school year.

As the construction work nears completion, the school community can look forward to a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a beacon of education and community spirit in Frankfurt's Europaviertel for years to come.
