Emergency Service THW Bayern Holds Informative Conference, Inviting Experts in Civil Protection

In a bid to address the current challenges in civil protection, the THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) organised a conference in Munich on September 10, 2025. The event, the first of its kind, was organised by Dr. Fritz Helge Voß, the THW Regional Representative for Bavaria.

The conference brought together THW volunteer and professional specialists, as well as specialist staff from the THW leadership in Bonn. The gathering also saw the participation of experts from various sectors such as police, armed forces, fire brigade, Bavarian Red Cross, German Red Cross, German Life Saving Association, Johanniter Accident Assistance, Maltese Aid Service, and specialists from the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior.

The focus of the conference was to utilise the expertise of all experts to promote awareness of a strong civil protection. Over 50 experts discussed the need for structures to be rebuilt and an interdisciplinary awareness of the topic of civil protection to be created.

Dr. Fritz Helge Voß emphasised that good civil protection requires the ability to act not only of experts, but also of all actors and the population. He also highlighted that the forum launched by THW Bavaria is an addition to the background work already underway and will continue in this format.

The topic of civil protection has gained renewed attention since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. THW's services extend to bilateral aid, EU's civil protection mechanism, and UN organisations. The organisation's work in civil protection is based on the commitment of over 85,000 volunteers nationwide.

The conference aimed to improve and strengthen collaboration and coordination among all specialists involved. The second expert discussion on this topic took place at the conference, with experts from various health sectors such as medicine, nursing, therapy, politics, and science participating.

THW's specialists, technology, and experience are utilised in THW's disaster response efforts. The organisation is called upon by the federal government for disaster response both domestically and internationally.
