Emergency Location Service Introduced in Thailand: Collaboration between Bangkok Police, AIS, and Google
In a groundbreaking move to enhance public safety, the 191 Emergency Location Service (191 ELS) has been launched in Thailand. This innovative service, a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Police Bureau, mobile operator AIS, and Google, is designed to help emergency services reach emergencies more quickly, accurately, and effectively.
The 191 ELS is available exclusively on Android devices using the AIS mobile network. It does not require any additional app installation, making it easily accessible for all Android users on the AIS network. When a call is made to 191, the system automatically sends the caller's mobile phone location to the emergency centre. This feature is intended to allow police to pinpoint the location and respond immediately, even if the caller is unable to speak.
The service, which remains free of charge for all users, aims to reduce errors in identifying incident sites. It is not limited to Thai users; the system covers both Thai Android users and foreign tourists roaming on the AIS network. The 191 ELS project serves the public interest, and the company encourages other mobile operators to join the initiative free of charge.
The initial rollout of the 191 ELS will take place across Bangkok, with plans to expand nationwide soon after its August 2025 launch. This service is a significant step towards improving emergency response times and ensuring the safety of the public.

The 191 ELS is designed to enhance public safety by automatically transmitting a caller's location during emergency calls. It is hoped that this service will bring about a significant reduction in response times and thereby save lives. The service was announced in partnership with mobile operator AIS and Google, and it is expected to make a positive impact on the lives of many Thai citizens and tourists.
