Emergency air rescue team undergoes training in wind conditions at Büsum

In the heart of August, ADAC Air Rescue is gearing up for a series of intensive training exercises in Büsum, Germany. The training, scheduled from the 25th to the 29th, aims to prepare crews for complex rescue maneuvers, including medical care and patient transport during winch operations.

The "Christoph Hansa" crew based in Hamburg has been at the forefront of these preparations. In the first half of 2025, they have been deployed for winch rescues an impressive 25 times. This training is a crucial opportunity for them to hone their skills and prepare for future challenges.

The training program is comprehensive, covering various scenarios and situations. Participants include over 30 ADAC staff and trainers, as well as partners from the regional rescue service system. The crews will be tested on providing medical care to people with various injuries and illnesses, transporting the medical crew, initial treatment at height, and transporting patients.

The training will take place at Helgolandkai in Büsum, with three training stations set up. These include silo towers and high-rise buildings on a company site in Büsum, a cordoned-off area on the front Helgolandkai, and a ship provided by LKN on open water.

In a unique collaboration, ADAC Air Rescue will be working alongside THW personnel during a water rescue simulation. THW will provide a boat from which actors will fall into the water, and the trainees will have to quickly transport the emergency physician by ADAC rescue helicopter, secure and fasten the victim to the rescue winch, and then hoist them up for initial treatment on board.

ADAC Air Rescue is one of the largest air rescue organizations in Europe, with 60 rescue helicopters and 38 stations, and over 1.3 million missions to date. It is a subsidiary of the ADAC Foundation.

Maintenance and technical provision are handled by ADAC Heliservice GmbH. The crews are trained by ADAC HEMS Academy GmbH.

Precise communication among crew members is crucial in these realistic simulations. The crews must accurately assess weather conditions, deployment location, and injury or illness status, discussing these factors to make decisions that ensure the best possible care.

ADAC rescue helicopters are an integral part of the German emergency service system, always requested via the emergency number 112 at the control center. With these training exercises, ADAC Air Rescue continues to demonstrate their commitment to excellence and readiness to respond in times of need.
