Eligible for Departmental Funding, Even Without Official Declaration or Decision!

In a world where academic opportunities can often be limited by financial constraints, one student at Dartmouth College has found success in securing funding for their passion in Classical languages.

Vidushi Sharma, a student at Dartmouth, has always had a love for Latin and decided to explore a new classical language, either Sanskrit or ancient Greek. However, she had not taken a Classics course until last summer.

Facing rejection from a global seminar and fearing a summer without plans, Sharma took matters into her own hands. She began researching funding opportunities and found two potential options: an intensive program in ancient Greek through CUNY and an independent study in Sanskrit with a private tutor based in New York City.

In the end, Sharma chose Sanskrit and applied for funding from the Classics department at Dartmouth. To her delight, her application was accepted, and she received a significant amount of funding to take Sanskrit lessons three times a week and immerse herself in one-on-one study for the entire summer.

Sharma's experience has inspired her to encourage underclassmen to apply for departmental funding, browse SAFE for sources of funding, demonstrate interest, and research programs to design a schedule.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Sharma has also shown a commitment to promoting Classical languages in her community. This year, she started a petition to bring Sanskrit back to Princeton.

While the guide to securing funding discussed in this article does not mention Sharma's experiences or her petition, it does provide valuable tips on finding funding for unpaid internships and preparing for senior thesis funding before the senior year.

It is important to note that the source of the information in the guide is not specified. However, the guide serves as a useful resource for students seeking to fund their academic pursuits in Classical languages.

Sharma's story is a testament to the power of determination and the importance of seeking out opportunities for academic growth. By following her lead and taking advantage of available resources, students can broaden their horizons and pursue their passions, regardless of financial constraints.
