Electronics companies Elektrobit and Foxconn have joins forces to create a software-tailored electric vehicle (EV) platform.

AI-powered platform EV.OS aims to integrate both hardware and software elements, with the purpose of facilitating the mass production of electric Self-Driving Vehicles (SDVs).

Electronics companies Elektrobit and Foxconn have joins forces to create a software-tailored electric vehicle (EV) platform.

In a bid to enhance the scalability of electric vehicle (EV) software for increased production efficiency, Elektrobit and Foxconn have formed a joint development agreement (JDA). The goal of this collaboration is to create a software platform named EV.OS for EV development.

The AI-centric software includes a reference electrical/electronic architecture system (EV.EAA), a non-differentiating EV operating system, and an EV application. Elektrobit will integrate the software platform and the EV.EAA system into a Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) platform.

The main focus of the project is the growth of electrification and digitalization in the automotive industry, particularly in the platform solutions space. Elektrobit's Software Development Kit (SDK) has been integrated into Cognizant's SDV-focused solutions package aimed at OEMs and tier one suppliers.

The software development process will be digitalized, using a continuous integration/continuous testing/continuous deployment (CI/CT/CD) toolchain and a Level Three virtualised environment. High-performance electronic control units (ECUs) will be used in real-time for service-oriented architecture.

The platform is expected to reduce the overall total cost of ownership and accelerate the commoditisation of the automotive industry for consumer benefit. Third-party integration is planned through the inclusion of a semantic vehicle application programming interface (API) in the platform.

Maria Anhalt, CEO of Elektrobit, stated that the JDA aims to create a scalable platform that reduces complexity, shortens development cycles, and supports future mobility business models.

This collaboration comes at a time of increased uncertainty within the EV space, with fluctuations in consumer demand and changing regulatory support affecting some OEMs' electric transition plans. Some OEMs have pulled back from their electric transition, while others have committed to widespread electrification.

Foxconn, known for its partnerships with OEMs, including a partnership with Stellantis for the development of semiconductors, is optimistic about the potential of this collaboration. The JDA is a significant step towards a more efficient and scalable EV software solution, which could potentially revolutionize the EV industry.

In February, Elektrobit also formed a second SDV-focused partnership with Cognizant. The Cognizant package includes several AI-driven tools for developing SDV architecture. The details of the Cognizant partnership, however, are not directly connected to the EV.OS software platform or the SDV platform in this JDA with Foxconn.
