Electrified BMW Expansion - Upcoming launch of 25 new EV models, spanning from i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9
BMW is taking bold steps to secure its future in the electric vehicle market. The German automaker has trademarked a range of names for new electrified vehicles, indicating a significant expansion of its electric and hybrid vehicle lineup.
The company is working on a sub-brand for a range of City Cars under the banner of 'BMW Project...', and has trademarked names for 25 new electrified vehicles, ranging from i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9, as well as X8 and X9. This move gives BMW security by securing the badging options for its electric and hybrid vehicles.
Two new platforms, CLAR and FAAR, will underpin the electric future of BMW. These platforms will be used in a variety of power levels, with new electric motors set to power BMW's electrified vehicles. The power levels will range from 135bhp to an impressive 800bhp.
In addition to the new sub-brand, BMW is planning to release models that will sit above the new X7 in the SUV range and the 9 Series as well. A longer wheelbase version of the BMW i3 is reportedly planned, and a roadster version of the BMW i8 is also reportedly in development.
The electrification of BMW's vehicles is set to move apace from now on. BMW has already launched the BMW i3 and BMW i8 since 2013, and the electric iX3 and the flagship iNext are expected to be released from around 2021.
BMW sold over 100,000 electrified cars in 2017, representing a 60% increase in sales of cars with electric assistance. The company plans to release 25 electrified cars, including EVs and hybrids, by 2025. Electric and hybrid SUVs will be a big part of BMW's future, with the automaker announcing that it will offer electrified SUVs under the new "Neue Klasse" starting from 2025. This marks a fully electric era for BMW, with specific model names yet to be publicly detailed but set to replace current electrified models progressively.
Two new vehicles, the BMW i4 and BMW i5, are mooted for production, adding to the growing list of electrified vehicles from BMW. The BMW i8 was launched with a roadster variant in mind, and the BMW i8 roadster is expected to join the lineup in the near future.
In conclusion, BMW is making a strong push into the electric vehicle market with a range of new models, sub-brands, and platforms. The company's commitment to electrification is clear, and it is set to lead the way in the electric and hybrid vehicle market in the coming years.
