Electric vehicle subsidies in Romania are being reduced by half, as stated, to enhance the scheme's long-term financial viability.

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Forests has announced updates to the Rabla Auto 2025 Program, Romania's initiative to promote clean mobility. The minister, Diana Buzoianu, revealed the changes during a recent statement.

One of the key adjustments is the eco-voucher for full-electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The new value will be RON 18,500 (approximately EUR 3,500), a decrease of 30% compared to the value of EUR 5,000 granted last year. This adjustment is aimed at offering support to as many Romanians as possible this year.

Interestingly, subsidies for a new vehicle with a thermal engine (including LPG/CNG) or for a motorcycle remain unchanged at RON 10,000. Similarly, subsidies for the purchase of a new plug-in hybrid vehicle or an electric motorcycle remain at RON 15,000, and for a new hybrid vehicle, the subsidy remains at RON 12,000.

The official offer period of the eco-vouchers for electric vehicles within the Rabla Auto 2025 program is from March 20, 2025, to October 31, 2025. The minister did not mention any changes to the eco-voucher for full-electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles not marketed in Romania, which currently stands at RON 18,500 (approximately EUR 3,500).

The Rabla Auto 2025 Program will be covered through the Social Fund for Climate in the future. This move is part of the financing framework's development towards a more stable and sustainable structure.

The objective of the Rabla Auto 2025 Program remains less pollution and a gradual transition towards clean mobility in Romania. The minister did not mention any changes to the subsidies for other types of vehicles mentioned in the previous bullet points.

These adjustments were reported by Ziarul Financiar, and they mark a significant reduction compared to the initial promises of EUR 7,500 made at the beginning of the year. The minister's statement did not elaborate on the reasons behind these changes. Nonetheless, the Rabla Auto 2025 Program continues to be a significant step towards promoting clean mobility in Romania.
