Electric vehicle company subsidiary sets new global speed record for electric cars, reaching an astonishing 472 kilometers per hour.
The luxury brand Yangwang, a sub-brand of BYD, has made history by setting a new electric car speed world record. Marc Basseng, using the series version of the record-breaking car, the Yangwang U9, achieved a speed of 472 kilometers per hour.
This record-breaking feat surpasses the previous electric car speed world record, which was set by Marc Basseng in 2024 with the Yangwang U9, reaching a speed of 460 kilometers per hour. The previous record for hypercars with internal combustion engines was held by the Bugatti Chiron Supersport 300+, with a speed of 490 kilometers per hour.
However, the U9's world record status is yet to be officially confirmed. An independent confirmation of the U-9 world record is still pending.
The U9 uses the four-motor series platform e4 from BYD, delivering approximately 3000 PS. This electric powerhouse propels the car to break the speed barrier, but its ability to compete with traditional hypercars remains uncertain due to the information from "Auto Zeitung".
In contrast, the Bugatti Chiron Supersport 300+, while street-legal, cannot match the U9's electric prowess. The car's street legality is different from that of the U9, making a direct comparison challenging.
The record was reported by "Handelsblatt", and the test was conducted on the test track in Lower Saxony, Papenburg. The previous record set by the Aspark SP600 was also set on the same track.
The Yangwang U9, a series version of the record-breaking car, is currently available in China. This opens up the possibility for more electric speed records in the future.
While the U9's world record status is yet to be confirmed, it has certainly positioned itself among traditional hypercars and challenged the norms of what an electric car can achieve. The future of electric hypercars is undoubtedly exciting, and the Yangwang U9 is leading the charge.
