Electric SUV BYD U9 Track Edition Outpaces Globe's Electric Vehicle Speed Milestones
In a groundbreaking achievement, BYD's high-end sub-brand, Yangwang, has announced the Yangwang U9 Track Edition as the fastest production electric vehicle (EV) in the world. The supercar, unveiled in February 2024, has redefined the boundaries of sustainable motoring with its record-breaking speed.
Designed for unmatched performance, safety, and driving experience, the Yangwang U9 Track Edition boasts a top speed of 472.41 km/h (294 mph) at Germany's ATP proving grounds. This impressive feat was verified by professional driver Marc Basseng, who piloted the record-setting run.
Collaborating with Giti Tire, Yangwang created semi-slick, track-focused rubber for the Track Edition. The special compounds and unique tread of these tires ensure stability and durability under extreme loads, contributing to the supercar's exceptional performance.
The U9 Track Edition also benefits from the e Platform and DiSus-X body control system, which are also found in the Yangwang U9. The DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control system adjusts suspension at each corner in real time, enhancing the car's handling and stability.
The Track Edition's quad-motor setup spins up to 30,000 rpm and delivers 555 kW of output, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 PS per tonne. The supercar's total system power exceeds 3,000 hp, providing ample power for its high-speed runs.
Advanced thermal management ensures sustained extreme performance, while the U9 Track Edition incorporates the world's first mass-produced 1200V ultra-high-voltage platform.
Marc Basseng, who set the previous EV speed record in 2024, admitted he "never expected to break [his] own record so soon" with the Yangwang U9 Track Edition. The achievement underscores BYD's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Founded in 1994 by Wang Chuanfu, BYD initially started as a rechargeable battery manufacturer. The company later expanded into the automotive sector, with BYD Auto being established as a subsidiary in 2003. The Yangwang U9 Track Edition is a testament to BYD's continued efforts to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.
Despite holding the title of the fastest production EV, the Rimac Nevera R still holds the title of the world's fastest-accelerating production car, electric or otherwise. Regardless, the Yangwang U9 Track Edition's record-breaking speed marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of electric vehicles.
