Electric Mercedes EQS, featuring a sturdy solid-state battery, offers an impressive driving range of up to 1200 kilometres.
On Tuesday, Mercedes announced a significant milestone in the development of electromobility. The automaker conducted a demonstration drive using an electric vehicle of the EQS type, covering a distance of 1205 kilometers without the need for recharging.
The electric vehicle used in the demonstration drive was equipped with a new solid-state battery, a technology that has been hailed as a game-changer by Markus Schafer, Mercedes-Benz's board member responsible for development. This battery system increased the usable energy content of the battery by 25 percent, demonstrating its potential not only in the lab but also under real-world conditions.
The demonstration drive, which took place from Stuttgart to Malmoe, set new standards in electromobility. Despite a minor trunk malfunction during the Chancellor's tour, the EQS vehicle had a remaining range of 137 kilometers upon arrival in Malmoe. The weight and size of the battery in the slightly modified EQS vehicle were comparable to a standard EQS battery.
Other manufacturers are currently working on the series production of electric cars with a range exceeding 1000 kilometers, but so far only in the high-end segment. Mercedes aims to bring innovations like the solid-state battery into series production for their customers by the end of the decade, offering a new level of range and comfort.
Volkswagen is also making strides in solid-state battery technology, developing electric vehicles in partnership with QuantumScape. The company plans to industrialize this technology and launch it in series production within this decade, with initial steps already being taken in 2025 at the Salzgitter plant in Germany.
The successful demonstration drive by Mercedes underscores the practicality of future battery technology for long-distance travel in electric vehicles. This development is a promising step towards a more sustainable future for automobiles.
