Record High Postal Voting Expected for Upcoming German Federal Election

Federal Returning Officer Georg Thiel has predicted a record high in postal voting for the upcoming German federal election. In an interview with the Funke media group's newspapers, Thiel stated that postal voting is expected to exceed 40 percent, marking the highest rate of postal voting since the introduction of the option in 1957.

In the 2017 federal election, around 13.4 million voters used the postal voting option, which corresponded to a rate of 28.6 percent nationwide. However, Thiel anticipates a doubling of postal voting for the upcoming election, due in part to the ongoing pandemic.

Thiel does not anticipate significant coronavirus effects on voter turnout for the upcoming election. He mentioned that previous state elections during the pandemic have shown no significant deviations in voter turnout. This includes the state of Bavaria, which had the highest share of postal voters at 52.2 percent, while the overall postal voting share decreased from 47.3 percent in 2021 to 37.0 percent nationwide.

Thiel believes that there will be no significant deviations in voter turnout for the upcoming election, despite the pandemic. He made this statement in the Friday editions of the Funke media group's newspapers.

This anticipated increase in postal voting is significant, as it represents a doubling of postal voting compared to the 2017 federal election. Thiel anticipates that postal voting will exceed 40 percent in the upcoming election, setting a new record for postal voting in Germany.
