Elderly competition: Donald, age 96, emerges as the oldest participant in Countdown show

In a remarkable turn of events, 96-year-old Donald Elsom from Willingham, Cambridgeshire, has made history as the oldest contestant on the long-running daytime quiz show, Countdown. The show, which began on Channel 4 in 1982, is a words and numbers quiz hosted by Colin Murray and produced by Lifted Entertainment, a part of ITV Studios.

Despite leaving school at 14, Mr. Elsom, who possesses a sharp mind and love of numbers, had a quiet talent for working with figures that he nurtured over the years. His love for Countdown, which he has been a dedicated viewer of for decades, is evident as he prepares to appear on the show on Monday afternoon.

Mr. Elsom, who has had a varied career in the Royal Air Force, as a police dog handler, butcher, and school site agent, has also made a significant impact in his local community. In April 2023, he received Maundy Money from the King in recognition of his community service and dedication to his local Church of England congregation. He also raised more than £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2023 through a local sports field event.

The Countdown gameshow consists of 15 rounds, with the goal of becoming the daily Countdown champion. Mr. Elsom, who has found terms like "decimals" and "algebra" intimidating initially, is ready to take on the challenge. The producer responsible for the broadcast of his performance is yet to be publicly specified.

The broadcaster has described Mr. Elsom as bringing warmth, wit, and wisdom to the long-running show. The Countdown experience, he has said, is a lovely one he will remember for the rest of his life. He even plans to frame the photo from the show.

With more than 90 seasons under its belt, Countdown continues to captivate audiences with its intellectually stimulating rounds. Mr. Elsom's first episode will air on Channel 4 on August 11 at 2.10pm. Don't miss out on this inspiring story of a 96-year-old making history on one of Britain's most beloved quiz shows.
