Eisenstadt Diocese faces turmoil as financial chief exits early amid tensions

The Diocese of Eisenstadt is facing a leadership change after just two years of financial restructuring. Johannes Stipsits, appointed as economic director general in autumn 2022, will leave his role earlier than expected. His departure follows growing tensions over cost-cutting measures and a loss of confidence from Bishop Ägidius Zsifkovics.

Stipsits took charge in late 2022 with a mandate to overhaul the diocese's finances. In his first budget, he cut spending by 20 percent, citing a need for urgent reform. Yet despite these efforts, administrative costs remained unusually high compared to other dioceses—except for the Military Diocese.

In a 2023 interview, Stipsits described the diocese's financial state as dire, requiring a full restructuring. His approach, however, sparked controversy. Farmers staged protests outside the bishop's residence after church-leased farmland was reallocated. Another contentious move was the diocese's purchase of a winery in Deutsch-Schützen, which drew criticism. Relations with Bishop Zsifkovics deteriorated over time. The bishop, who had originally hired Stipsits, now no longer trusts his leadership. With no official explanation for the early exit, Stipsits' deputy, Mario Klikovits, is set to take over the position. The latest financial report shows revenues exceeding expenditures. But the diocese has not released details about its economic situation before Stipsits' appointment or comparative data with other dioceses.

Stipsits' departure leaves the diocese in a transitional phase. Mario Klikovits will now lead efforts to stabilise finances and address lingering cost concerns. The impact of recent reforms—and whether they will continue—remains to be seen.
