Ecuador's gambling sector draws in 65 enterprises

'Tis a new dawn for gambling in Ecuador! The Internal Revenue Service (SRI) has announced that a whopping 65 sports betting companies are eager to dive into the recently legalized market, promising a 15% tax on their gross revenue.

This sea change in the gambling scene follows the approval of the Economic Efficiency and Job Creation Law, which laid the groundwork for the establishment of a regulated betting industry in the country. SRI Director, Damian Larco, revealed that the 65 applicants include 63 local established warriors and 2 international bigwigs.

In July, the SRI introduced a registration process for sports betting companies, marking a crucial step towards legitimizing the industry. The 15% tax applies not only to the operators' revenues but also to players' winnings, a double whammy meant to wrap up a substantial chunk of the industry's income for the government.

The SRI has made it clear that they mean business, pledging to take down errant, unlicensed parties by blacklisting their IP addresses. The aim? To quash tax evasion, money laundering, and other malicious activities that tend to lurk in unregulated markets.

But here's the twist, experts predict that the actual number of active sports betting providers in Ecuador might be above the official count. Larco, however, assures the SRI's relentless vigilance to bring all operators under the new regulatory umbrella.

From Casinos to Sports Betting

Ecuador's gambling story is a rollercoaster ride of lawmaking and regulatory shifts. In 2011, a national referendum gave former President Rafael Correa the green light to ban all gaming establishments, leading to the closure of casinos, betting houses, and bingo halls. Critics charged that this prohibition took a toll on the tourism industry, with annual visitor numbers plummeting.

The current online gambling landscape in Ecuador is fuzzy. While explicit prohibition is missing, the lack of clear regulations leaves a gray area that some operators have exploited. In response, President Daniel Noboa attempted to address this issue by proposing a national referendum to establish a fully regulated gambling sector, but the proposal was overshadowed by other national crises.

Despite these stumbling blocks, discussions about the potential legalization of physical gambling establishments in Ecuador are still brewing. Meanwhile, the focus is primarily on sports betting, but an expanded regulatory framework could offer a significant economic boost to the country if navigated effectively.
