Economic Minister Habeck endorses hydrogen initiatives in Bremen

The cities of Bremen and Lower Saxony are set to become leading locations for green hydrogen technology, following the approval and funding of two significant projects: "Clean Hydrogen Coastline" and "HyPerLink". These projects, totalling approximately €65 million, have received backing from both the federal and state governments.

In Bremen, the "HyPerLink" project involves the construction of pipeline infrastructure to link the city with the emerging hydrogen network. The infrastructure development, being undertaken by H2Industries, aims to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises in their transformation towards green technology. The specific location for this project is the Mittelsbüren steelworks.

Meanwhile, the "Clean Hydrogen Coastline" project, located at the same Mittelsbüren steelworks, includes the construction of a 50-megawatt electrolyser. This project is expected to make Bremen a frontrunner in the adoption of sustainable hydrogen infrastructure.

The projects, which are still under development, have been approved according to EU state aid rules in February. Despite this, they remain subject to these rules. The federal and state governments are providing the funding, with Bremen's state share amounting to around €19.5 million.

The projects are being handled by companies EWE and Gasunie, and the final approvals for the national funding were jointly handed over by the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck, and Bremen's State Minister for Economic Affairs, Maike Frese.

It's important to note that these projects are not limited to Bremen. Development is also taking place in Lower Saxony, with the aim of securing both cities' futures as industrial locations in the growing green hydrogen sector.

The infrastructure development is expected to make significant strides in Bremen's industrial landscape, ensuring its position as a key player in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
